Upper West Side Duplex
This 7,200 square foot duplex apartment is located a in a pre-war, Upper West Side building adjacent to Central Park. The two-floors were awkwardly connected in a previous renovation, requiring a complete gut renovation. On the lower floor the new plan creates long views to Central Park from all spaces other than utility rooms. Concurrent to this horizontal extension, a new opening in the floor makes way for a generous stair hall with pale oak panelling which sweeps upward through the home’s core and links the building elevator to key circulation routes on both public and private levels. Extensive millwork interventions in wood, metal, glass, and stone are arranged throughout the new open plan, carefully placed to accommodate the rhythms of the large family’s daily life.
