Carnegie Hill Duplex
The design for this 2,000 sq. ft. duplex apartment on the south side of 86th Street in Manhattan required a full reworking of the existing floor plans. The redesigned spaces are organized around a new steel and wood stair, located against the only southern windows on each floor. The stair is conceived as a screen, through which southern light can filter deep into the apartment on both levels. Abundant storage was essential for this client, and every available opportunity was taken to insert closets and cabinets, including the base of the stair itself. The finishes are intentionally simple, to organize and clarify the space: dark claro walnut floors and stair elements contrast with light travertine bath surfaces, marble kitchen counters, light plaster walls, and lacquered cabinets throughout.
